Mulled Wine Poached Pears

Mulled wine is a great warming drink for European Christmas weather, so unless you have a Christmas in July event, Australia is usually better with icy, fruity drinks to celebrate! If you love the taste of mulled wine, this recipe is a great way to enjoy those spicy Christmas flavours all year round!

Ingredients:

☐ 4 Pears (Bosc are good for this recipe)

☐ 750ml of your favourite Red Wine (Non-Alcoholic red wine can be used)

☐ 3 tbsn Sugar Substitute (such as Monk Fruit)

☐ 2 Cinnamon Sticks

☐ 4 Cloves

☐ 2 slices Orange

Method:

  1. Peel and core the pears, leaving the stalk in-tact. A good way to core the pears is to use a small melon baller at the base to scoop out the centre.
  2. Pour the red wine into a saucepan big enough for the pears and add sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves and orange slices. Place over a medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
  3. Bring to the boil and gently add prepared pears. Turn heat to medium and simmer for 20 minutes, gently turning to ensure all sides absorb the liquid equally.
  4. Serve with a little of the liquid and a serving of lo-fat custard or a small scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Place a green leaf (a Pear leaf if you can get hold of one) or a clean plastic leaf on top near the stem for aesthetics.
